A trio of teams raised championship banners for their tremendous 2009 seasons. With Ravenna, Mogadore and Woodridge rising to the top of their respective Portage Trail Conference divisions, it is fitting that those same three teams are well-represented on the Northeast Inland All-District team that was released on Friday. The Ravens completed an undefeated PTC Metro Division season to claim top honors over contenders Field, Kent Roosevelt and Springfield.

Just days after peppering the All-Metro Division team, the Ravens placed six on the All-District team led by First-Team selection Parnell Taylor.

Taylor was the team’s leading rusher, finishing with 1,393 yards rushing and 17 touchdowns.

Another pair of Ravens joined Taylor on the All-District First Team, with Greydon Pavlik earning a spot on the offensive line and Dan McCoy on the defensive line.

Pavlik helped create the holes for Ravenna’s backfield, which powered the team’s offense that averaged 31.3 points per game.

Meanwhile, McCoy was the anchor to the Ravens’ defense that allowed only 12.4 points per game and owned five shutouts during the regular season.

Two other Ravens were named to the Second Team All-District, with quarterback Zach Thomas and offensive lineman Matt Benson earning the spots.

Meanwhile, linebacker Deiondre Mack and receiver Colton Collage  were the final Ravens to make the All-District team as an Honorable Mention selection.

As for the champions of the PTC County Division, both the Wildcats and Bulldogs were well-represented in their respective divisions.

A quartet of Mogadore standouts were named to the Division VI First Team All-District. The group includes offensive lineman Kevin Pollock, wide receiver Matt Traugh, running back Jake McAvinew and linebacker Kodey Chance.

McAvinew was a part of a two-headed monster for the Wildcats on the ground, along with Chance. McAvinew finished with 1,024 yards and scored 10 touchdowns, while averaging a staggering eight yards per rush.

Also gaining Honorable Mention All-District from Mogadore was linebacker Zach Glagola, along with defensive lineman Andrew Monea and kicker Alex Roebken.

For Woodridge, the 2009 season was a special one because it was the best the school has ever seen.

The team won its first-ever league title and qualified for the state playoffs for the first time ever.

They are currently the only PTC team still alive in the postseason and will take on No. 1-seeded Chagrin Falls tonight at Twinsburg High School at 7 p.m.

The Bulldogs had four players land on the Division IV All-District First Team, led by offensive standouts Anthony Kelly and Anthony Westren.

Kelly and Westren are now the proud owners of practically all of the school’s offensive records, with Kelly finishing the year with 1,648 yards rushing this season on 191 carries, while he also scored 19 touchdowns.

For Westren, the season finished with him completing 135-of-218 passes for 2,353 yards and passing for 29 touchdowns against only six interceptions.

Westren’s favorite target, wide receiver Brandyn Peters, was also named First Team All-District. Peters hauled in 41 passes this year for 798 yards and reached the end zone 11 times.

The fourth Bulldog player to earn First Team All-District was linebacker David Charles. Charles was named the PTC County Division Player of the Year after raking down 117 tackles this year, along with four sacks and 21 tackles for a loss.

Woodridge also placed Cameron Hilling, Brennan Owens and A.J. Graham on the Honorable Mention team in Division IV.

For the team’s best season ever, head coach Eric Ervin was named the Division IV Coach of the Year. The 2009 season was Ervin’s fifth at Woodridge and his career record now stands at 29-33.

In Division II, the Kent Roosevelt Rough Riders placed four standouts on the All-District team, with offensive lineman Ryan Anderson, quarterback Evan Shimensky and linebacker Marcus Rogers all earning First Team.

On the Division II Second Team was linebacker Marcus Wright for the Riders.

The long list of other PTC players named to the All-District team includes (see the complete Northeast Inland All-District team to the right of this story):

The Ravenna Ravens took care of business on Friday night with a 47-0 win over Springfield in the final game of the regular season.

The victory gave Ravenna (8-2) the 2009 Portage Trail Conference Metro Division championship with a perfect 7-0 league record. The Ravens also unofficially clinched the eighth and final playoff spot in Division II, Region 5, and will visit top-seeded Mentor Lake Catholic in the first round of the playoffs next Friday.

“I’m proud of our kids for the tenacity they showed tonight,” said Ravenna coach Jim Lunardi. “It’s tough to get up for every game. We’ve had distractions both this week and last week with homecoming and senior night. The kids knew we had to have this game, and they came through.

“Also, we were able to play everyone (tonight). That’s important to the younger kids.”

Ravenna’s top running back, Parnell Taylor, had a big night. Although by his lofty standards Taylor had a sub-par rushing performance, gaining 85 yards on 11 carries, he returned an interception 101 yards for a touchdown in the second period. It gave Ravenna a 20-0 lead, and the Ravens never looked back.

“Taylor and I went over the films (Friday),” said Lunardi. “We saw this particular pass pattern. I told him to stay back and when the pass was thrown, to jump on the No. 2 receiver. He got a good look at the ball, the eyes over the top, and was able to return it all the way.”

The Ravens scored the first two times they had the ball, and were able to score in every quarter.

In the first quarter, Ravenna had a short field after a bad punt by Springfield (6-4, 4-3).

Taking over on the Spartans 26, the Ravens marched to the end zone in four plays with  D.J. Jones scoring from the 16. The PAT failed and Ravenna led 6-0.

Then after a four-and-out by the Spartans, the Ravens took six plays to go 55 yards. Quarterback Zach Thomas scored on a keeper from the 7, and Katelin Fields kicked the PAT for a 13-0 lead.

Late in the second period, the Ravens made their best march of the night. Taking over the ball at their own 5, it took Ravenna seven plays to march the distance on the ground.

Taylor led off with a 20-yard gain, then Stephen Wilmington added a 41-yard scamper around the left end. Jones sprinted 22 more yards before he scored from the 15.

The Ravens defense forced the Spartans to go to the air by holding their rushing attack to 20 yards in the first half. They were successful to a certain extent, gaining 111 yards passing, but the Ravens kept the Spartans out of the end zone with two interceptions.

In the second half, Ravenna scored on a 20-yard run by Thomas, a 6-yard run by Taylor and a 27-yard run by backup quarterback Brandon Holt. Johnathon Hartong, Trevor Stankavich and Fields each added a PAT.

The Ravens gained 320 yards rushing on 40 carries while holding Springfield to just 54 yards rushing on 29 attempts.

Ravens run roughshod over sparse Spartans

Ravenna showed no mercy on wounded Springfield on Friday night, trouncing the visiting Spartans, 47-0. The triumph lifts the Ravens to 8-2, 7-0 in the Portage Trail Conference Metro Division and possibly a third straight trip to the playoffs.

“Hopefully, we made the playoffs,” Ravenna head coach Mike Lunardi said after the win. “It’s Shangri-La right now.”

Springfield (6-4, 4-3) was shorthanded coming into the game as starting quarterback Steven Cole was out after injuring his knee playing basketball earlier in the week.

The Ravens went to work immediately after holding Springfield on downs to start the game.

Four plays after starting at the Springfield 26-yard line – following a poor punt – the Ravens faced a fourth-and-inches from the 16. Ravenna tailback D.J. Jones covered all 16 yards on an off-tackle play for a touchdown but a botched PAT attempt kept the score 6-0.

Springfield’s next possession ended like the first and for the second straight time Ravenna had a short field to work with. Six plays and 55 yards later, quarterback Zach Thomas scored untouched on a keeper around left end. Place-kicker Katelin Fields, the only girl playing football in the PTC, booted the PAT for a 13-0 Ravenna lead.

After three series and one pass attempt, which fell incomplete, the Spartans went to the air for a flea-flicker and a long, sideline strike to get just outside of Ravenna’s 10-yard line. But one pass later, Parnell Taylor leaped high for an interception 1 yard deep in the end zone and returned it for a touchdown. Taylor also led the Ravens in rushing with 85 yards.

With less than a minute to go in the half, Jones again scored from 16 yards out to put Ravenna up, 26-0.

Springfield went to the air to move the ball downfield but once again Ravenna had an end-zone interception to snuff the threat.

Springfield recovered an onside kick to start the second half but failed to convert on a fourth-and-inches play.

Ravenna made the Spartans pay with a 69-yard drive that ended with Thomas rushing untouched 20 yards for another touchdown and a 33-0 Ravens lead. Springfield never threatened to score again.

Her best foot forward: Katelin Fields, Ravenna Ravens kicker, only girl playing in PTC

When Katelin Fields decided to join the Ravenna football team two years ago, her mom was hesitant because of stereotypes surrounding the typically all-male sport.

“I told her, ‘If I’m making a mistake, let me learn from it,’” Fields said.

Now a senior kicker for the team, Fields considers herself just another part of the team, despite being the only girl in the Portage Trail Conference playing football.

Fields splits time as the Ravens’ place-kicker with Johnathan Hartong, who joined the team from his primary fall sport of boys soccer.

Meanwhile, Fields, who plays on three other teams at Ravenna High School, said she joined the team to push herself and to see if she could actually do it.

“I’m not here to be the standout. I’m here to do what I can do,” Fields said. “I’m here to help the team out, because I’m a part of the team.”

Fields, who has made one field goal and scored 19 extra points for the team this year, began playing football when she was in eighth grade.

She began playing because her older brother was involved, but she didn’t continue into high school because of her participation on the girls soccer team.

Although her soccer coach would work around the football schedule, ultimately, she felt that over the summer, the boys had gotten bigger while she was still the same.

However, Fields decided to join the football team during her junior year and said ever since she has been on the team, she feels like a part of the family.

“They’re like brothers pretty much,” Fields said. “I know these guys are here for me, and they always have my back.”

Senior offensive and defensive lineman Dan McCoy, who has played with Fields since the eighth grade, said she is one of the toughest people he knows.

“She can hold her own,” McCoy said. “No one gives her a hard time.”

Freshman coach Brett Dubinksy said it is Fields’ lively attitude that has brought her so much success in the male-dominated sport.

“She’s a competitor and she is confident in herself, and as her coach I am (confident in her ability) too,” Dubinsky said. “She’s a lot of fun. She livens things up because she’s kind of a jokester.”

Fields said she hasn’t always been the life of the team. Before playing football, she pushed herself to be a leader and win and didn’t think much about why she cared so much about sports.

Although Fields is on the softball, basketball and soccer teams as well, she said the lessons she has learned from football head coach Jim Lunardi and her fellow players changed her perspective and now she plays for love the game, not just to win.

While she plans to play soccer at Thiel next fall, Fields said she will keep what she has learned from football in her mind at all times.

One thing she will never forget is getting an opportunity to carry the ball on a rushing play during a junior varsity game this year.

She said Hartong and herself offer their help to the JV team and next thing she knew, she was in the game. Her rushing play did not produce a touchdown, but the memory will last forever.

Fields has even had an impact on the community with her decision to play football.

One day, a mother and her eight-year-old daughter noticed Fields while she was working at her part-time job.

They recognized Fields and decided to introduce themselves. The mother said the little girl talks all about Fields on Friday nights and now wants to join the football team with her brother.

“People notice you’re doing well, and I didn’t even think of that,” Fields said. “I worked really hard over the summer. I didn’t believe it until I got here, but practice pays off.”

Lunardi, who during prayer before games always says “God Bless these boys and girl,” said he wouldn’t think of turning anyone away from the team because of gender. He said he knows Fields is capable in her position and that is all that matters.

“As long as you do what we ask of you and get the job done,” he said. “She’s just like the other boys out there and the only thing is she just gets changed in a different locker room, that’s it.
