PTC Metro Football Report: This time around, Ravenna football coach Jim Lunardi chose to go for one
Legendary Nebraska head coach Tom Osborne is often remembered for one gutsy call that didn’t go his way.
Trailing Miami in the 1984 Orange Bowl, Osborne’s Huskers scored a late TD to cut the Hurricanes’ lead to 31-30. Rather than going for an extra point, however, Osborne elected to go for two points — and the win.
Nebraska QB Turner Gill’s pass attempt was tipped away in the end zone, however, giving Miami the win and the national championship.
The reason I mention this is that Ravenna head coach Jim Lunardi was faced with a similar dilemma in Friday night’s game against Kent Roosevelt.
After QB Kyle Spellman hooked up with Kyle Kornbau for a 16-yard touchdown in the first overtime, Lunardi elected to kick an extra point and send the game into the second OT, rather than go for two and end the game — win or lose — right then and there.

Back to Back PTC Championship
The Ravens brought home the PTC Metro Leagues first ever back to back Championship! The team has earned another mark in the record books and has every right to be proud of their accomplishments this year.
Additional Records broken this year include dual backs with more than 1,000 yards rushing; done by DJ Jones and Stephen Wilmington. Trevor Stankavich has earned his spot in the schools record books for most Touch Backs in a given season with 30 Kicks placed in the End Zone with his longest kick a 75 yarder after a 15 yard penalty.
Since the Ravens have joined the PTC Metro League in 2005, the team has won three Titles as League Champions.

Metro: A look at fall’s defending champs, top contenders

As the 2010 fall sports season nears the end of its first week, it’s time to take a look at the teams that have historically been at the top of the Portage Trail Conference Metro Division, and those looking to defend conference championships this season.
We’ll start with football, where the Metro football title has been traded between the Kent Roosevelt Rough Riders and Ravenna Ravens, making beating them the key to any new team looking to rise to the top of the division. And opposing coaches know that.
“(To win the division, someone) has to beat Kent and Ravenna in the same year. That’s a given,” Field coach Patrick Youel said.
Youel’s Falcons have come up just short against the Rough Riders or Ravens in each of the last three seasons. However, all of the coaches at the top of the division are aware that each of the teams in the Metro are improving and could be dangerous this season.
“(After beating Kent and Ravenna,) then you have to beat everyone else, which isn’t going to be easy with Springfield being what they will be this year and the expected improvement of Southeast,” Youel said.
Southeast will be directed by alumnus Steve Sigworth, who is in his first season.
When asked about the division, Jim Lunardi, coach of the defending champion Ravens, also mentioned that he expects improvement from Crestwood, Coventry and Norton.
“Any time there’s a change and a new coach comes in, I think that excites and energizes a program,” he said.
Jerami Hodgkinson will be guiding the Comets for the first year after Neal Kopp became the athletic director, and Glenn Kruger will captain the ship for the Panthers. Both Hodgkinson and Kruger were assistants for their respective teams last season. The Red Devils will be guided by Chris Kosiorek, who enters the PTC from Mechanicsburg High School.
With all the changes and expected improvements from programs across the board, 2010 is setting up to be an interesting season for PTC Metro football.
Falcons and Devils race to the finish
In cross country, Field coach Ed Conroy and the Crestwood husband and wife coaching combination of Thomas and Rosalie Franek have built the division’s premiere programs in boys and girls, respectively. Conroy’s Falcons are the defending boys champions. Senior running star Billy Darmon and a strong cast of returning runners has Field seeking back-to-back championships.
“We have five of our top seven returning from last year’s squad,” Conroy said. “I think the PTC Metro is going to be a fantastic race between all the schools. We are looking forward to it.”
In addition to Darmon, the Falcons have fellow senior Tyler Bragg and juniors Jake Balca, Christian Bochkor, Brian Long and Mike Robinson ready to take the program to the next level.
“We missed qualifying for the state meet the last two years by one place,” Conroy said, “so we are determined to return this season to Columbus and have a strong performance.”
Field last made it to the state meet in 2007, finishing in 11h place.
Crestwood will likely be a top contender to Field.
Speaking of Crestwood, the Red Devils have had a stranglehold on the top spot of the PTC Metro in ther girls competition. The Devils have won all five of the Metro championships in cross country and should be difficult to unseat again this season.
“Crestwood had a fantastic group of runners last season that will be returning this season,” Conroy said.
Senior Sammi Vaughan will be the leading Crestwood runner after having made the state meet as an individual qualifier in 2009.
Conroy believes that his squad, led by seniors Alexus Lowden and Kayla Titko, will benefit from a trip to the regionals last season in its attempt to get past Crestwood.
“This group of girls are runners with tremendous confidence knowing they have more experience than last season,” Conroy said. “This confidence should pay off at the end of the season during the PTC, District and Regional (meets).”
Pirates, three times the success
When it comes to volleyball, Southeast or Field has won at least a share of every PTC Metro title since the league began in 2005. They are also the three teams that captured a volleyball sectional title in 2009. Coventry was the third.
The Pirates’ Brittany Woodard, a third-team All-Ohio setter as a junior, was a big reason why Southeast claimed the league title in 2009, and a big reason why her team could repeat in her senior season.
One team that could threaten to end the streak by Southeast and Field is Kent Roosevelt, which returns a plethora of talent led by Emily Rutzky and Emily Carver. Coach Kasey Adelman’s team, which lost only three games last season as a younger squad group and then earned a first-round bye in the tournament, fell victim to the area volleyball Cinderella story, Stow, in the sectional championship match.
Rough Riders leader
The Kent Roosevelt boys soccer team has found itself quite a leader in coach Josh Huettich. He has won the Metro Coach of the Year award and guided the championship team in all three seasons he has been there.
Kent (0-0-2) has won almost two-thirds of the games that Huettich has coached, but has started this season with non-league ties to Green and Western Reserve Academy. The team has seen three different players score its three goals on the year.
Coventry (1-1-0), with senior Dragan Mijacovic and junior Eric Ashley, will be at the top of the list of teams looking to give the Rough Riders a run for their money in the Metro Division.
Mijocavic and Ashley both scored twice in the Comets’ season-opening 4-1 win over the Massillon Tigers.
Girl kickers off to fast start
If the first week is any indication, then girls soccer could be the most competitive sport in the Metro Division this fall. Five of the seven teams have at least a .500 record through the first four days of the season. Field (2-0) and Ravenna (2-1) lead the way with the most productive weeks.
The Ravens scored six goals in their two wins before being blanked by Waterloo. The Falcons have won two straight one-goal games and have allowed only one goal through the first two matches. The fact Ravenna is at the top is nothing new as the Ravens are seeking their fourth division championship.
Coventry could be the most high-powered offensive attack in the division, scoring five goals in its first game against Warren Harding. Paige Carlin’s hat trick got the Comets off to a fast start.
